US international student numbers hit record high

Published 07 January 2025

The United States welcomed over 1.1 million international students during the 2023/24 academic year, marking an all-time high, according to the IIE’s 75th annual Open Doors report.

The figures reflect a 7% increase from the previous year, with India surpassing China as the top sending country for the first time since 2009. Indian student numbers surged by 35%, reaching 331,602, while China saw a 4% decline but remained the leading source of undergraduate and non-degree students.

The report highlights the growing importance of international students to the US economy, contributing $50 billion in 2023. Over half pursued STEM fields, particularly in maths, computer science, and engineering. Graduate enrolments and Optical Practical Training (OPT) numbers also saw record growth, increasing by 8% and 22%, respectively.

California, New York, and Texas hosted the largest student populations, while Sub-Saharan Africa emerged as a rapidly growing region, with a 13% rise in enrolments. Nigeria ranked as the top sender from Africa, and Ghana recorded a 45% increase.
